GEOFF THOMAS MBE – Cure Leukaemia Patron

Geoff Thomas is a former professional footballer who played for Crystal Palace, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Nottingham Forest, among other clubs. In the 1990s, England capped him nine times.

In 2003, a year after retiring from the game, he was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia (a form of blood cancer) and given just three months to live. After a stem cell transplant from his sister Kay and treatment from Professor Charlie Craddock CBE, the co-founder of blood cancer charity Cure Leukaemia, Geoff entered remission from the disease in January 2005.

Ever since Geoff has dedicated his life to raising vital funds to help other blood cancer patients now and in the future. In 2005, he set up the Geoff Thomas Foundation and was awarded the Helen Rollason Award at BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Geoff cycled the Tour de France on three separate occasions, and in 2017, he took on the biggest of all his challenges in the saddle.

In June 2021, Geoff was awarded the MBE for his efforts in respect of cancer charity fundraising.

Thank you for being so supportive.

We both attended a recent training camp in Mallorca, preparing for the Tour 21 challenge.

                           ABOUT

in June 2024, we will tackle The Tour 21 on behalf of Cure Leukaemia, alongside 23 amateur cyclists as we look to complete the entire Tour de France route one week ahead of the professionals.

This will be the most demanding, physically and mentally challenging event of our lives and well worth it.

Starting in Tuscany, Italy, The Tour 21 will take place from Saturday, 22 June – Sunday, 14 July and will tackle all 21 gruelling stages and 3,500km (2,200 miles) of the Tour de France route – one of the world’s most gruelling sporting challenges which will see the team tackle over 52,300 metres of elevation across the 21 stages – the equivalent of cycling up Mount Everest six times.

The Tour 21 is Cure Leukaemia’s biggest annual fundraising event.

Each rider is set a minimum fundraising target of £30,000 to raise over £1M collectively.

The money raised will be invested in the national Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP), which has been solely funded by Cure Leukaemia, the UK Charity partner of the Tour de France, since January 2020.

TAP is a network of specialist research nurses at 15 blood cancer centres in the UK’s biggest cities. This network enables accelerated setup and delivery of potentially life-saving blood cancer
clinical trials to run, giving patients from a UK catchment area of over 30 million people access to treatments not currently available through standard care.

Every 14 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with Blood Cancer.
